FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT
If you are in control of any part of a commercial premise, you are under a legal obligation to carry out a detailed fire risk assessment to identify risks and hazards in the premises.
You must keep a written record of your fire risk assessment if your business has five or more people.
The legislation dealing with Fire was recently consolidated under The Regulatory Reform (Fire safety Order) 2005 which came into force on October 1st 2006.
This places responsibility on the employer, among other things, to:
- Have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment carried out, and
- Appoint one or more persons to implement the findings of the risk assessment
Failure to comply with the statute carries both civil and criminal liability.
